Perry Ellis Unlikely Fashion Designer to American Icon

Perry Ellis was an American Designer who was born in 1940 to an average middle class family. He went to college for business administration and later earned his Master's degree in retailing from New York University in 1963. He started his career working in retail as a buyer and merchandiser. Although he could not even sketch a fashion drawing, his ability to understand market demand for fashion and deep understanding of how the whole industry operated led his employer at the time, the Vera Companies, to ask him to design a collection for them. Perry Ellis released his original Portfolio collection of women's sportswear in 1976. His clean cut, casual style earned him acclaim from many women as he created the new classics they wanted for their wardrobes.

Ellis Breaks into the World of Fragrance

Perry Ellis first introduced a fragrance to his repertoire with Perry Ellis for Women and Perry Ellis for men in 1985. These scents were light spicy florals that embodied the heart of the Perry Ellis fashion designs. The Perry Ellis for men is still on the market today and is a great inexpensive choice for an evening on the town. Ellis died in 1986, but his name brand continues to flourish even today.

The Perry Ellis Tradition Continues

Later fragrance introductions from the Perry Ellis collection include 360. Perry Ellis 360 for women which was introduced in 1993 and contains top notes of melon, tangerine, lily, osmathus and cool blue rose. Middle notes consist of lily of the valley, lavender, water lily, and sage. Bottom notes include sandalwood, vanilla, vetiver, and amber. It is a musky floral fragrance and comes in a cylinder shaped white box. Other variations include 360 Red, 360 White and 360 Blue (are you noticing the connection, here?) each with their own unique notes, but enough of a thread that holds them together and a reminder that Perry Ellis was one of the great fashion designers of America. 360 for Men was introduced three years after the women's version and contains notes of bergamot, freesia, lavender, citrus, vetiver and musk.

Other notable Perry Ellis fragrances that are still available today include Perry Ellis Reserve which is a delightful daytime floral fragrance that contains a blend of yellow freesia, marigold, lotus blossom, white violet and lily. The Perry Ellis Reserve for Men, on the other hand is a somewhat simple musky fragrance consisting of amber, musk and wood.

After Friday's lunch-brake, millions of working individuals around the world are checking their office clocks counting the minutes before it is officially allowed for them to go home, relax with their family and friends and put their minds at ease. Well, I might have been carried away, since some of these activities cannot be considered recreational, but a lot of others, even if not included in this list, are. Before turning back to reenter your office premises, try to maintain your optimistic side alive and realize that yes, weekends are short, but they are still your chance to elude and experience in full the recreational activity of your choice.

You have been waiting for the right time to announce to your folks that you are ready to join your friends and begin those scuba diving lessons you wanted for so long. When you actually managed to convince them that you will be careful and that sharks cannot be found anywhere near your instructor's pool, you have to squeeze the classes into your busy weekend schedule and still manage to do all the other things you have been postponing for a while. Cut yourself some slack here! You are an energetic individual that has lots of things to worry about during the week. Don't add to you worries the fact that you will not be able to go out with your female friend and help her select a new set of curtains to match her recently acquired living room leather couch. You hate promising and then breaking a promise, but if you are honest with yourself, your needs, and with your friend, it is more likely that she will forgive you this time. Just don't make it a habit. What I am trying to say here is that you should put some priorities in your life and select which recreational activity to do when, depending on your needs and wants. You should not become an egoistic person that never considers other peoples' thoughts and feelings, but at the same time you should not forget that your own time is your own to invest where you see fit. Try to find the balance between what you need for yourself, what others need from you and what you want to succeed at the end of the day; much like the office deal you know how to handle. Guard your weekend time as your precious time to do the things you want the most.

Multitasking and over-committing yourself is a habit you should quit, since it is not healthy for you to always be on the run from errand to errand, visit to visit, promise to promise. Your weekends should be a time of relaxation, rejuvenation, and pleasure, and not a time for you to go crazy for the things you did not manage to complete in less than 48 hours! Nobody should blame you for investing in yourself. Even those who will attempt should know better. Teach them what it is like to lie down on Sunday night feeling confident with yourself and proud of weekend's recreational accomplishments.

Packing for a vacation or even a weekend getaway that involves outdoor activity can prove tedious when it comes to dressing your feet. And, since Breckenridge is a great town for active adventure seekers, you might consider giving your feet some extra consideration if you plan to explore the trails and local scenic spots.

• Protect Your Ankles: Are you planning an aggressive hike that will require a lot of elevation gain, climbing, or walking through rocky paths? In these cases, it's usually best to pack a pair of hiking boots that are high enough to cover your ankles, securing them and giving you the extra protection to avoid sprains and twists. Not only are they necessary components to a boot or trail running shoe, but they will keep you dry and clean from the dirt and dust you're likely to encounter throughout your hike. Since you'll want to keep your feet dry, it's good to choose a pair made of wool. Additionally, it's never a bad idea to keep an extra pair of dry socks in a day pack in the event that one pair gets immersed in water.
• Wear it in: Feet need time to adjust to any new shoes. If you're planning to visit Breckenridge with a new pair of shoes, or are planning to use them for more activity than they are used to, it's a good idea to start breaking them in early. Wear them around the house, while you're out running errands, or for short hikes before your trip. This will help your feet grow accustomed to the new shoes and meld themselves to the ins and outs of the pair.
• Prevent Blisters: Wearing in a new pair of boots is a great first step, but hiking in Breckenridge will likely expose your feet to new positions and angles than they've recently known, so it's a good idea to purchase moleskin, an adhesive padding that serves as a sort of extra duty band-aid in the event that a blister develops. This fall or autumn, there are so many different styles, with so many different designers and collections. Clothes are in many different colours, including lots of rich deep autumnal tones and the staple for this season, black is just about every where. There are also, all sorts of historical references. But what are the key trends for autumn and how can you adapt these trends to suit your wardrobe?

Grunge

Grunge was a trend originally started in the nineties by Marc Jacobs and this autumn, it is back. A really easy trend to wear taking inspiration from catwalk shows of Burberry Prorsum and Alexander Wang amongst others. To get this look layer fine knits in dark colours add fingerless gloves, slouchy boots or beanie hats. This season grunge is more glossy and glam than first time around so look for luxurious fabrics and slouchy relaxed cut clothes for a comfortable and laidback feel.

Gothic / dark romance

At the autumn shows, it was hard to get away from the Gothic and dark romance references. With Alexander Mcqueen high necked black lace inspired by Elizabethan costume, Luella's witch like outfits, black lace dresses and long crimped hair, Yves St Laurent's identical black haired, black polo neck clad models and Derek Lams black lace veil. Black lace is probably the most popular version of this trend, try wearing it with dark eye make up and red lips or dark red or black nail polish.

Folk

The folk trend was seen at Dolce and Gabbana, Hermes, Gucci and DKNY. It definitely had a feel of seventies bohemian about it. This is a great trend for autumn as it combines rich autumnal colours with black in paisley, ethnic or tartan prints. Short dresses are teamed with black or coloured opaque tights and flared trousers teamed with tunic tops, the look was completed with scarves, fringed accessories and faux fur trims.

Structured

Tailoring for this season is all about structure with collars and shoulders making a big statement. The structure on the top half was balanced with simple and streamlined bottom halves. Trousers were slim legged and cropped and skirts straight and knee length. Structured tailoring was particularly seen at Jil Sander, Balenciaga, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs with angular shoulders and upstanding collars that looked as if they may have been constructed by a structural engineer but feminine with it. Look out for exaggerated and rounded shoulders on suits and dresses and big shawl style collars.

Punk

Rodarte led this way at the autumn shows with punk styling including cobweb tights and ripped dresses. Marc Jacobs autumn winter had a strong punk theme but this time with a much prettier edge. The main features of this trend are ripped and slashed clothes, fishnets, checks, plaids and mini skirts.

Military Style

Military style is big news this season with double breasted and closely tailored suits and coats, epaulettes, gold and brass details and buttons and military badges. Alexander McQueen contrasted Navy blue military tailoring with cold trim with a chiffon skirt and gold sparkling leggings. At Temperley, there were white, fitted military style jackets and at Ralph Lauren, red military style blazers and berets. This trend has emerged on the high street as differing styles of military coats and jackets.

Couture details

The autumn 08 catwalk shoes have seen a trend for all sorts of lavish couture like details adorning clothes including beading, embroidery, pleating, folding, bows and ruffles. This trend translates very well to the high street for Christmas evening wear. There will be all sorts of elaborate dresses and minimalism will certainly not be something associated with evening dresses this winter.

Boots are one of my favorite things about winter - once the novelty of snow and sweaters has worn off, anyway.

Boots can be practical or sexy, although rarely both in the salt-laden streets of harsh winter climates. Speaking of which...

While it may often seem like store clerks are just trying to boost their commissions by ringing up protective sprays and gels, their sales gimmick is not totally bogus.

It is essential to understand that not all boots are created equal. The word 'boot' is not synonymous with water-proof or snow-friendly. Respect your fashion investment by weather-protecting and cleaning all of your winter footwear regularly.

Realize that protective and restorative shoe applications cannot perform miracles. Have the common sense to know when to air on the side of practicality and not to wear your suede stiletto calf-cut boots. Salt and water produce damaging, lasting stains which - in addition to ruining boots' finish - actually corrode the integrity of genuine suede, leather and fabric. Purchase a swank boot bag in which to tote your trendy footwear to work in nasty winter conditions while opting for damage-proof snow or rain boots while en route.

Boot Tip: If you remember nothing else: Be seasonally consistent when putting an outfit together. Do not wear boots and a skirt with bare legs; tights, nylons, or even flesh colored fishnet stockings help bridge the (thermal & fashion) gap between your knees and your hemline.

Ankle Boots

Very funky footwear when worn with tights and a skirt. Avoid wearing ankle boots with long skirts past the knee - this tends to look frumpy and matronly.

A unique cut that looks great with skirts of all lengths. This style accentuates your calf muscle and stands out from the crowd of knee-high boots. Very sexy, indeed.

Tall Boots

The classic knee-high boot. Ensure that the boot fits snugly around your leg; if the boot gapes open you may need to have it altered for a more chic look—a standard procedure at most cobblers.

Fur-Lined Boots & UGGs

Narrow, fur-lined lace-up tall boots are a sweet accompaniment to a flirty short skirt. For a funky casual style, try wearing knee socks over your tights and letting them peek (ever so slightly) over the top of your boot. This look works best if your socks and tights are contrasting colors.

I experienced my own mid-life crisis at 33 and for the next 15 years transitioned from entrepreneur to college student to helpmate and homemaker to entrepreneur to unemployed to employed to unemployed to commissioned sales to employed to unemployed to NOW. Quite a circuitous route!

Yes a plan helps, but sometimes meeting our future takes a leap of faith. I started a blog as a leap of faith, and I wanted a career change. Did I know for a fact that there were thousands of men who might benefit from my experience in the trenches? No, but my senses told me that many men wished that they were better understood. Men often are misunderstood, lack support for their decisions, and go unnoticed for their contributions to family and community.

When I "retired" from the advertising world, I remembered thinking, "Now I know why men die after they retire." I lost my moorings. Even though closing my business was a conscious decision, I was so identified with a fast-paced, competitive world that I lost my sense of self.

Five years later, I launched a small-press publishing company and thought that I had finally found my calling. That venture aborted just on the cusp of major national exposure. It took me four years and a mental breakdown to recover.

But sometimes what we perceive to be a "breakdown" is really a "breakthrough."

What I've learned is that we can't control anything. I can't control a thing.

Think for a moment about Chinese handcuffs; the harder you pull, the stronger they bind you. The same is true with the mental and emotional confusion wrought from a breakdown. When we try to control our life, we will continue to muddle along. Instead, consider the possibility that by adapting to a new and changing reality, clarity and direction are yours for the asking.

The harder I pulled those handcuffs, the tighter they bound me to the old form. I couldn't let go, until my life circumstances forced me to.

Men don't have it easy in this world. Protecting and providing for your family, day in and day out, doesn't garner much media attention. How do you protect your family from the unseen? How do you provide when the "old" economy reneges on its promises? Or steals your financial future?

Are you stressing and grinding out each day with no end in sight?

I know how you feel I (I'd been whipsawed by the gyrations of the auto industry.) I've felt that way myself (the never-ending anxieties of a mother.) And I've found that holding on doesn't work. Today is the only day we have. I spent all that energy and emotion lamenting my fate, but I can't say that it was wasted.

I came to realize that things happen in their own time. Lao-Tzu wrote, "Waiting is not empty hoping." There is such a thing as timing. I needed to acquire more emotional tools and mental weapons to be prepared for unforeseen battles.

I forgot who I was for a while, but I never stopped striving and readying myself.

A day comes in every seeker's life called the "dark night of the soul." We cannot measure how long that day will last. Eventfully you emerge, and can say with confidence and clarity: I know who I am! That knowledge gives you the courage to act.

Let that be your anchor, not the "shoulds" of society or the expectation of others. Provide for and protect your family to the best of your ability. That's all that's required.

But time? There are only 24 hours in any day. OK, perhaps a few seconds more if you want to get technical. But your day is basically limited to 24 hours. Can you make time? Guys of my generation thought so. In fact, making time was something we enjoyed though it had little to do with business.

Can you save time? We often say we can. And we often try. But does that make it true? You might run an errand during your lunch hour rather than after work. Having done so, you tell yourself you saved a half hour. But did you? Is there actually a bank somewhere into which you can actually deposit and save those 30 minutes?

Its about time you asked yourself what your time is worth. To your business, to the people who depend on you, to yourself? Isnt it about time you made the most of your time? Whether its for family, for friends, for play, or for work, now is the best time to make the best use of your time.

Contrary to the popular expression, you dont want to spend your time merely doing things invest your time in accomplishing things, meaningful things. Put time to work for you. Do with it what you will, but do it wisely because at most you have only 24 hours in any day.

Nearly everyone who discusses their wardrobe with me, as an image consultant, seems to think their wardrobe is the worst possible. Do you have more than one wardrobe? Do you have wardrobes in different rooms? In fact, some people can't even remember all the places where they have clothes stored. Sometimes opening the wardrobe in the morning is just too much and the clothes are left lying around the bedroom from the day before and the day before that. Why be depressed when an organized wardrobe can be achieved and opening the wardrobe door in the morning can be such a joy and start the day off on a really positive note. Your wardrobe should only contain clothes that actually fit, a range of items that you can put together in different ways for each occasion you might need and also opening the wardrobe door should fill you with pleasure.

Here are some strategies to help you achieve your ideal wardrobe, but first of all you have to understand that there is no one perfect wardrobe. What you are aiming for is the right wardrobe for you, and so you need to know some facts about you and this is where you might appreciate the help of an image consultant.

Understanding these four key points about yourself will ensure that your ideal wardrobe is a step nearer.

1. Your lifestyle. What is the balance between your working and your non-working life and what range of occasions do you need items for?

2. Your style personality. What types/styles of clothes do you like to wear and what accessories do you need to complete the look. Think about jewellery, bags, shoes, belts, scarves etc.

3. Your colouring. What colours suit you and how should you wear these colours. Which colours should you avoid?

4. Your body shape. What are your personal shape characteristics now, at this moment in time and how can you make the most of these? Notice the now, you need to have clothes for your present body not the one you wish you had. Be realistic.

An image consultant can help you with all these aspects.

Once you have this important information about yourself on these four key points and understand the interplay between them making you unique, then you can look in your wardrobe, and all the other places where you store clothes! At this stage, you will probably find you are very keen to get started on your ideal wardrobe as you will have the knowledge to make sense of your clothes collection.

I suggest you remove everything from your wardrobe that does not work at the moment and work through each of these questions in turn for each item. When you get a yes answer the item goes back in the wardrobe. It might seem a bit long winded, but believe me it will be worth the time and care in the end.

1. Can the item be saved, for example by teaming with a better colour?

2. Does it need accessories to improve it? If so which ones? Make a list.

3. If it was bought as a suit, is it best split up so you wear the two parts separately and with different items? Check that each part is worth saving, quite often only one part is, if so be strong and only put this part back

4. Is the item from the wrong season, eg a winter coat and this wardrobe sort is happening in the summer?

If the answer is no to all these four questions, then decide who to donate the items to.
Now look in your new slimmed down wardrobe, re-arrange the items to make your choice each morning a pleasure. Make a list of those pieces that you need to search for so that you can maximize your current collection. Do check out the latest trends so that you can update your look.
